A wealthy man lives alone in a small cottage. Being partially handicapped, he had everything delivered to his cottage. The mailman was delivering a letter one Thursday when he noticed that the front door was ajar. Through the opening he could see the man’s body lying in a pool of dried blood. When a police officer arrived he surveyed the scene. On the porch were two bottles of warm milk, Monday’s newspaper, a catalog, flyers, and unopened mail. The police officer suspects it was foul play. Who does he suspect and why?
Noting that it’s dried blood, I’d assume it’d been a while since the murder. And with the Monday papers, one would assume he passed away after Monday. Question is: why would the milk be warm if that’s the case? Unless it’s the milkman who delivered the milk even after he killed the man?

Hmmm, the game is on! But… If the killer is the milkman do you think he’d be that careless as to return to the crime scene…

Well it’s not a new fact that you’d normally find criminals checking on their scenes of crimes, but, you’re right, I can’t really be sure. I only know that the usage of ‘warm milk’ makes the set seem suspicious.

Well the milkman just wasn’t as observant as the mailman who noticed that the front door was open. So I think we can safely cross off the milkman.

Well he’s another thought: why weren’t Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s papers there too? Maybe it’s the newspaper man himself after all

Now that is right! The police officer suspects the newspaper delivery person. The absence of Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s newspaper indicates that the delivery person knew there was no one there to read it.
